Between 2002/03 and 2007/08, average monthly household expenditure rose by 2.7 per cent per annum from $3,290 to $3,760 (Table 1). Households across all income groups experienced increases in average monthly household expenditure. Between 2002/03 and 2007/08, increases in expenditure for the top 80% households ranged from 2.6 per cent per annum to 3.4 per cent per annum. Increase in expenditure among the lowest 20% households was 1.1 per cent per annum.
After taking into account the decline in household size, the average monthly household expenditure per household member increased by 3.2 per cent per annum between 2002/03 and 2007/08.
