Singapore - Foreign domestic workers have been coming to Singapore since 1978, when the government authorized their employment in the city-state, but current laws fail to safeguard their rights. They work around the clock as maids in wealthy households, often earning less than 300 Singapore dollars (210 US dollars) a month to support their families back home.More than 180,000 migrant domestic workers live and work in Singapore, predominantly from the Philippines and Indonesia.
But despite their large numbers and long-term presence in the island-state, even more than 30 years later Singapore laws do not guarantee foreign maids the rights and benefits they deserve, claim advocacy groups.
