SINGAPORE – As part of the Kent Ridge Common National Day series, our focus is on discussing the values embodied in our National flag and their reality in Singapore. The five stars of our national flag represent Singapore’s ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. For today’s series, we will be looking at democracy.
To kickstart, let’s begin with the definition of democracy. According to dictionary.com, democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. When Mr Lee Kuan Yew was an opposition leader, he expoused the virtues of democracy in a number of speeches.
