SINGAPORE – The Internal Security Department (ISD) has a significant place in Singapore’s history. Synonymous with Operations Coldstore and Spectrum, it would be fair to say that the ISD has played a key role in our political events that shifted in favor of the PAP. Operation Coldstore saw the incarceration of members from the opposition Barisan Socialis party. During Operation Spectrum, some of those whom are arrested were assisting the opposition Worker’s Party.
The ISD’s involvements in both events have left behind a chilling legacy, and was instrumental to the development of a fear factor, especially for someone who expresses support or is sympathetic to the opposition’s cause. It became some sort of a bogeyman who is allegedly involved in a series of behind-the-scenes machinations to specially deal with individuals who sit on the opposition side of the fence to that of the ruling party.
