Why Singaporeans do well in math

SINGAPOREAN students consistently top international surveys in mathematics and science, like the Trends in International Math and Science Studies (TIMSS).
What accounts for their prowess? Perhaps their teachers are better trained, or parents tutor their own children instead of relying on outsiders. Perhaps it is the emphasis on student effort rather than talent that keeps them from giving up when faced with complex problems. Perhaps it is the quality of their textbooks, which present material clearly and progressively.
