Tweaking electoral rules: The paradox of contesting GRCs the SMC way

SINGAPORE - The Group Representation Constituency (GRC) system was long suspected to be a platform to allow the People’s Action Party (PAP) to blood new promising candidates. This has been confirmed by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong who mentioned in an interview that the GRC provides an assurance of a victory to new candidates and entry into parliament during their initial foray into politics. Miss Sylvia Lim, a non-constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) raised criticisms of the GRC system and suggested that our electoral contest should return to the one that took place prior to 1988 when candidates vied for Single Member Constituency (SMC) seats.
