The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is dispatching a task group, comprising an LST with two Super Puma helicopters on board, in support of international efforts to counter piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
Located off the coast of Somalia, the Gulf of Aden stretches almost 800km and is home to some of the world's busiest shipping routes. This key region, however, has been plagued by an alarming rise in levels of piracy, from about 30 vessels attacked in 2007 to more than 100 in the past year.
