Rumors say that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) (NYSE:SMI, 981.HK) may receive mainland government support via Datang Telecom (600198.SH) to acquire Singapore-based Chartered Semiconductor (C27.SIN), reports 163.com quoting Commercial Times. SMIC did not comment on the news. Datang Telecom became SMIC's controlling shareholder in November 2008 through the purchase of 16.6% stake.
SMIC may also merge with new Hua Hong NEC, which acquired Shanghai Belling (600171.SH) and Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing, according to other rumors.
