With a GDP of $161,348.8 million US dollars in 2007, Singapore enjoys one of the highest GDP per capita in Southeast Asia. However, despite its spectacular economic growth (from 702.2 million US dollars in 1960), Singapore is still categorised as a “water-stressed” country, as less than 1,000m3 of water is available per person from within the country, making water resources management a key strategic development area, and even more importantly, a national security issue. In comparison, its two closest neighbours, Malaysia and Indonesia, have an annual ratio of internal renewable water resources per capita of one hundred and sixty eight times and ninety one times that of Singapore’s, respectively.
