Tranquil Singapore shaken by Mumbai killing

"The death of Ms Lo has, at least in the short term, undermined Singapore's self-confidence that it can be immune from international terrorism. With Singapore's Prime Minister away at the APEC summit in Lima, the deputy PM, S. Jayakumar, has already warned the people of Singapore that such an attack could happen here and that they must remain vigilant and be prepared.

His warning should not be taken lightly, because Singapore is in the unenviable position of having the necessary supply-side and demand-side pre-conditions for Islamic terrorist attacks to be carried out.

As a close ally of America and Britain, with a small presence in Afghanistan, and an international centre of business, finance and trade, Singapore definitely represents a potential target for Al-Qaeda-inspired terrorists (i.e. there's demand).

Singapore, like Britain but unlike America, is also extremely exposed to the sort of people who are willing and able to execute terrorist atrocities (so there's also potential supply). Indonesia, which has been a breeding ground as well as a target for Islamic terrorists, is merely a short boat ride away."
