Singapore to turn spotlight on business in upcoming Budget

SINGAPORE, Nov 10 - As the world economy heads for a rough ride, Singapore Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam yesterday sketched out three considerations that will guide Singapore's Budget next year.

One emphasis of the 2009 Budget will be on helping businesses stay strong and competitive. Speaking at the opening of the reconstructed Ee Hoe Hean clubhouse, Tharman said that Singapore should continue to provide some support for households, especially those affected by job losses.

However, while the previous Budget was tilted towards helping households cope with inflation, the coming Budget will focus especially on helping businesses with their costs and cashflow, and supporting them in their efforts to stay competitive, he said.
