"Lee should, however, know that there isn't a one-size-fits-all model for growth. Singapore's system can't be grafted onto a nation of India's size and diversity. What constitutes urbanisation in a tiny city-state with a natural harbour may not work in a geographical behemoth. Coast-to-coast cityscaping has environmental costs too, as China is discovering. Moreover, Singapore is a nominal democracy. China considers political rights redundant. Authoritarian rulers face less resistance while uprooting people. Over 150 million Chinese were moved by fiat from land into manufacturing in 10 years. In India, the world's largest democracy, the human costs of mass dislocation hurt politically."
