Asians warming up to nuclear energy

The ‘International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) sent a team of nuclear experts to the Philippines early this year to determine, at the invitation of the government, the feasibility of reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant or of building a new one.

It was the third country in Southeast Asia visited in recent years by IAEA missions to assess nuclear power potentials.

Last year, agency officials visited Thailand to advise a preparatory committee on the feasibility of nuclear power. In 2005, IAEA helped produce a pre-feasibility study on nuclear power planned for Ninh Thuan, Central Vietnam, by 2020.
