Corporal Dave Teo wasn’t blameless, but the big fish got away
Confucius said: “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” That remark seems rather pertinent when considering the case of Corporal Dave Teo, who became notorious after stealing out of his army camp with a loaded rifle with the alleged aim of exacting vengeance on some people who had crossed him in the past.
Mr Teo now looks set to lie in one of those metaphorical graves. Some observers have said that the sentence meted out to Mr Teo - nine years, two months in jail and 18 strokes of the cane - have effectively dealt him a blow he would be hard pressed to recover from. An early dropout from school with a history of psychiatric problems and altercations with the law, Mr Teo seems to stand little chance of turning his life around in a society that has a harsh attitude towards convicts and an intolerance of perceived failures.
