The top two seeds in the Women’s Singles event at the Volkswagen Open China in Changchun emerged successful at the semi-final stage on Sunday 18th May 2008.
China’s Zhang Yining overcame Singapore’s Li Jia Wei whilst Guo Yue defeated compatriot Li Xiaoxia in an all Chinese duel.
In outstanding form Zhang Yining succeeded in four straight games recording victory by the margin of 11-4, 11-2, 11-3, 11-9, whilst Guo Yue prevailed 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9.
It was for Zhang Yining a continuation of previous results whilst for Guo Yue it was a reversal of recent fortunes.
Perfect Record
Zhang Yining had played Li Jia Wei on eighteen previous occasions and had won all eighteen encounters never having been extended the full distance by the Singaporean. In Changchun she made it nineteen wins against the player with whom she is most familiar.
In their junior days they were both in the same training school in Beijing; Li Jia Wei eventually moving south to Singapore in search of international honours.
