SINGAPORE: The Energy Market Authority (EMA) and PowerGas Ltd., a member of the Singapore Power Group, have signed an agreement in which PowerGas will develop Singapore's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal on Jurong Island.

The terminal will have initial send-out capacity of 3 million tonnes (3.3 million tons) per annum with potential for expansion to 6 million tonnes (6.6 million tons) per annum. The terminal is expected to be ready for start-up in early 2012 to coincide with the first deliveries of LNG to Singapore.

PowerGas has already started the design and engineering work for the terminal to prepare the tender specifications for the construction and commissioning of the LNG terminal.

EMA's designation of PowerGas as the builder, owner an operator of the LNG import terminal was announced in September 2007.
