Singapore - A 20,000-kilometre undersea cable linking Singapore to France is to be upgraded next year to triple its capacity, operators said Monday. The consortium that laid the cable has engaged Fujitsu to upgrade its Singapore-to-India stretch. The Japanese electronics giant plans to install new dense wavelength division multiplexing equipment, a data transmission technology.

The South-East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 cable also has landing stations in Thailand, Malaysia, Italy and Egypt.

Members of the consortium include Singapore Telecommunications, France Telecom, Telekom Malaysia, VSNL and 12 other carriers.
