Singapore - A corneal transplant technique has been adopted by the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) that does not require the removal of the entire cornea, reduces the risk of rejection and speeds up recovery time, researchers said on Wednesday.

Those with cornea problems need only get the damaged parts replaced under the method called the lamellar transplant. Each donated cornea can now save more people from going blind.

Tan is presenting the method to 400 doctors attending the inaugural Asia Cornea Society Scientific Meeting starting on Thursday. The centre has coached 24 ophthalmologists from Japan, Australia, the United Stab Emirates and the United States.
