Singapore - Singapore Airlines (SIA) apologized to customers for a "long delay" after an A380 superjumbo was grounded due to problems with its fuel pump, the carrier said Wednesday. It was the first major glitch to hit the 4-month-old plane, the world's largest passenger aircraft, which has been flying since October on the Singapore to Sydney route.

The flight was scheduled to take off Monday night, but all 418 passengers had to get off the plane after the problem was detected, The Straits Times said. Some managed to leave nine hours later on a smaller Boeing 747.

Another 70 passengers were left stranded without hotel rooms, because lodging was completely booked for the Singapore Airshow, which started Tuesday.
