Singapore Airlines has criticised the recently approved Australia-US Open Skies policy, according to a report by ABC News.

The new Open Skies policy has not only paved the way for V Australia to join Qantas and United Airlines in flying to the US, but also barred Singapore Airlines’ from accessing the highly lucrative route.

"The Australia-US route is already under-served. There's a lot of demand that can't be met and as a result, airfares are far higher than they should be," the airline’s spokesman, Stephen Forshaw said.

"It's only through the genuine opening and lifting of restrictions that airfares will fall and consumers will benefit," he added.

Singapore Airlines has not given up however, as it will continue to lobby for the route.

"We've been flying to Australia for 40 years and we'll continue mouthing the arguments for what the consumer will get with more competition on the Australian route," Forshaw noted.
