SEPANG: Low-cost carrier AirAsia flew into Changi International Airport in Singapore for the first time yesterday, marking the end of the duopoly of the route by Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines that lasted three decades.

Singapore's Tiger Airways reciprocated with a flight into the KL International Airport's low-cost carrier terminal at 11.40am.

AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes, who flew on the inaugural flight into the island republic, likened the cost of travel between the two countries now to the "price of a roti canai". AirAsia will be plying the route with two flights daily.

Besides Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia has also started plying the route, which has long been regarded as being under-served. Both will operate one flight daily on the sector. >>>> More
