Indonesia’s Batam island eyes Singapore tourism boom

BATAM, Indonesia, April 1 — Indonesia’s Batam island, an industrial zone with dreams of transforming into a major tourist destination, is sprucing itself up to lure big-spending visitors from next-door Singapore.
Batam is looking to emulate the success of another Indonesian island close to Singapore, Bintan, which is already a luxury beach and golfing destination after opening high-speed ferry links to the city-state in the 1990s. Full story
