TUTICORIN: Officials of the customs department thwarted an attempt to smuggle in foreign cigarettes worth Rs 20 lakh at the Tuticorin port.
Commissioner of customs, C Rajendran said that based on specific information that cigarette was being concealed inside the imported cargo of biscuits and smuggled into India, they had intensified checks on the cargo. The officials found one entry filed by Chennai-based importer for import of biscuits from Singapore and that cargo was taken up for examination by special intelligence and investigation branch of customs office.
