Singapore To Impose Internet Filters For Undesirable Websites

In a move to strengthen the ban on undesirable websites, the Singapore Government will direct internet service providers (ISPs) to provide internet filters to local users.
It expected the ISPs to market the service actively to parents at the point-of-sale and renewal, according to Singapore's Information, Communications and the Arts Acting Minister Lui Tuck Yew on Wednesday.
The government is currently banning 100 websites which include those that contain pornographic content, sites which incite racial and religious intolerance, and those which promote terrorism and extremism. Full story

Singapore Resists Calls To Liberalize Parts Of Censorship Rules

SINGAPORE -(Dow Jones)- Singapore has resisted calls from a government- appointed panel to liberalize parts of its censorship regime, such as ending a symbolic 100-website ban and easing rules on distributing R-rated films, a government minister said Wednesday.

Man goes too far in punishing his wife and sons

A SINGAPOREAN man forced his wife and two sons to run around their flats 40 times in the sun from 1pm to 4pm as he claimed the boys had sneaked out of their unit without his knowledge and that his wife had stolen from their neighbour, reported Nanyang Siang Pau.
The mother and the boys, aged nine and 10, were later told to kneel and prostrate in front of the flats and ordered to stay outdoors for seven hours.
The boys had to carry their school bags when running while their father monitored their movement from the third floor hallway. He also shouted at them asking them to run faster or face more punishment. Full story

Koh Seah Wee, 40, deputy director at the information technology department of the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), allegedly raised fake invoices for non-existent projects and pocketed the money.

“The energy sphere, including atomic energy, is rather promising,” Sobyanin said. Singapore opposition party calls for fewer foreigners

An opposition party urged Singapore's government to slow the influx of foreign workers at a rare public rally Saturday in the tightly controlled city-state.
About 200 supporters of the Singapore Democratic Party also called for a minimum wage and a lower sales tax to improve living standards for workers.
"All we're doing is bringing in cheap foreign labor," SDP Secretary General Chee Soon Juan said in the rally at Speaker's Corner park, the only place outdoor rallies are allowed. "Citizens can't make a decent living when they have to compete with foreigners." Full story

Lewis Hamilton condemns 'dangerous' Singapore grand prix circuit

Lewis Hamilton tonight described the Marina Bay street track as "dangerous" after a combination of the slow driving surface and its unevenness created problems for the drivers.
Race organisers have modified the course by ironing out some of the bumps but Hamilton, who came a disappointing fifth in tonight's second practice session, said: "I think they've made it worse. The chicane is the worst corner I have ever driven in Formula One. It's just ridiculous. Last year it was small but now it's even more dangerous. We saw one other car take off [Adrian Sutil's Force India, which suffered damage to its front suspension]. Full story

Mas Selamat Repatriated As No Longer Security Threat To Malaysia- Home Minister Hishammuddin

KLUANG, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leader Mas Selamat Kastari was handed over to the republic yesterday after it was decided that he was no longer a security threat to Malaysia.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the decision was made after discussions between Malaysia and Singapore, besides the security and intelligence agencies as well as the special task force of both countries confirming that Mas Selamat was no longer a threat. Full story

Singapre property investment market recorded 86% growth

Singapore’s property investment market recorded an 86 percent on-year growth, according to property research firm Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL). The investment property sales amounted to S$5.91 billion in sales for the third quarter of 2010, which dropped eight percent compared to the second quarter.
JLL also highlighted the performance for government land sales and the hotel sector’s investment sales, which increases 23 percent compared to the last quarter up to S$519 million. Full story

New course for migrant workers in Singapore

An NTUC survey has revealed that family commitments are the main reasons why female workers avoid shift jobs, with respondents saying help with childcare would make shifts a more viable option. In Singapore, it’s “the father, son and holy Goh”.Hearing it for the first time, I thought it was a superb one liner. The person who coined it must be quite a fella. India presses Singapore to open up services sector to Indian professionals

NEW DELHI: India has asked Singapore to open up more services to allow a greater number of Indian professionals access the island nation’s cost accountancy and hospitality sectors. A comprehensive bilateral trade agreement between the two countries is being reviewed. “We want to take advantage of the second review to get more in services and are exploring all possibilities,” a commerce department official told ET.
Besides requesting Singapore to take deeper commitments in medical, health-related and education services, India needs to ask for expanding the existing list of 127 occupations by which professionals are allowed entry into Singapore, pointed out Amit Mitra, secretary general, Ficci. Full story

Latest statistics show Malaysian and Indian nationals were the largest groups of new arrivals to Singapore in the past decade. But the figures do not include those on short-term work permits or professional visit passes.
Contrary to widespread perception, the Chinese are not on top of the list. In fact, they totalled only 13,000 – or 3.88% – of the estimated quarter of a million new permanent residents (PRs) who arrived since 2000.
This was a lot fewer than PRs from Malaysia (81,000) and India (68,300) , according to official figures just released. Full story

Overweight Singapore soldiers told to trim down

SINGAPORE — Overweight Singapore soldiers have been told to trim down or risk getting the boot, a report said Friday.
Those who fail to shape up will be given a warning and have up to three years to trim down or risk being kicked out, the report said.
In a statement to AFP, the defence ministry confirmed the SAF has been implementing a weight management programme since 2002 but made no direct reference to expelling those who remain unfit. Full story

Apology for gaffe on Singapore Olympic Games certificates

Singaporean sports authorities apologized Friday for handing out 45,000 Youth Olympic Games certificates containing mock signatures of IOC chief Jacques Rogge.
When the commemorative documents for participants and volunteers were designed, simulated signatures of Rogge and another official were used in the layout - and remained in place when they were sent to the printers. Full story
