Singapore textbooks introduced to schools

Local school officials have begun the process of evaluating a list of new textbooks.

For the first time since 2001, school administrators and teachers are reviewing a state list comprised of 41 new kindergarten through eighth grade math titles. Their efforts will determine which books will be used in the 2008-2009 school year..

Educators encourage parents to offer feedback throughout the process, especially during the public commenting period.

The California textbook list includes one book developed by the UCLA math department, as well as several versions of books developed by Singapore's Ministry of Education.

These textbooks will allow some kindergarten through fifth grade California students to use versions of the math textbooks that helped their Singapore counterparts crunch numbers better than any other children in the world, reports Jeffery Thomas, president of textbook distributor SingaporeMath.com, Inc.
