One of the rules regarding the eligibility of candidates to qualify as a contestant for the General Elections is that they must not be bankrupts. Such a rule is also implemented in other democracies. However, the difference is that ruling parties in these democracies do not usually resort to defamation suits against their opponents. It was the defamation suits brought on by members of the ruling party against certain opposition party leaders that made them bankrupts. Examples include Tang Liang Hong, Chee Soon Juan and Joshua Benjamin Jeyaratnam. And the end result is that all of them are unable to contest in the General Elections.
