The issues involving the separation of conjoined twins

"One pertinent question that arises is if there is any medical necessity to proceed with the operation in the first place. The same question can be asked of the decision to separate the Iranian twins. Indeed, such an ethical question was asked by Dr Ian Kerridge, a Professor of Bioethics, in an interview with Medscape. In fact, Dr Kerridge felt that there wasn’t any medical necessity to operate on the Iranian twins because there wasn’t a marked reduction in life expectancy in their case although there is a risk of one developing an illness, which would also happen to the other, resulting in the reduction of life span."
